The Viseca wooden card is the first payment card made from Swiss wood. Innovation that sets an example. Following intensive development and a successful “Friends & Family” process, we are now pilot testing the card in everyday life. Innovation is part of our DNA. We have proved this once again with our wooden card: Together with Swiss Wood Solutions, a spin-off of Empa (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology) and ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), Viseca developed a functional prototype of a payment card made from wood. The feedback we received during initial tests was very positive, so we embarked on the process of industrial production of the card with Swiss Wood Solutions and Visa. Now we are almost ready to go. As part of a comprehensive pilot phase, we are testing the wooden card in everyday life. We are counting on your help – the feedback from our customers will ultimately determine the future of the wooden card.

For the “credit card made from wood”, Swiss Wood Solutions – a spin-off from ETH Zurich and Empa – has developed a completely new process for working with wood. This enables the manufacture of compact, high-quality cards made from wood – the ideal material for your new payment card.

Structure of the payment card.

Each card consists of four layers of wood veneer and one layer of paper that carries the copper wire antenna for contactless payment. The manufacture of the card is based on a patented process during which the wood is compressed at a certain pressure and temperature. This increases the density of the wood by a factor of 2 to 3.

The materials.

Only maple wood and paper from certified local forests are used. The layers of wood and the paper with antenna inlay are glued to the body of the card using an adhesive that is water-based and bio-based as well as biodegradable. This means that neither artificial resins or adhesives nor other chemical additives are used in the manufacturing process.
